In 1996, while teaching at The Lawrenceville School, Chris Maxey received the school's Joukowsky Fellowship, allowing him to work towards his Masters in Marine Resource Management at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami. During this year-long sabbatical Chris began his research work in sustainable aquaculture. He formed the Cape Eleuthera Marine Conservation Project and began to set the framework to build a school and research station at Cape Eleuthera in The Bahamas. The Cape Eleuthera Marine Conservation Project later became known as the Cape Eleuthera Foundation.
The Cape Eleuthera Foundation supports place-based education, scientific research, community leadership, and sustainable technologies. Major recipients of foundation grants include The Island School, the Deep Creek Middle School, and the Cape Eleuthera Institute. To read more about the programs we support, visit our Programs page.
